German federal chief prosecutor appeals release of 91 suspect
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Berlin, Feb 5, IRNA -- Germany`s chief prosecutor will appeal Thursday`s the acquittal by a Hamburg court of Moroccan-born Abdelghani Mzoudi accused of aiding the 9/11 suicide hijackers, DPA reported. The 31-year-old Mzoudi had been acquitted of charges of helping and abetting the killing of several thousand people in the United States on September 11, 2001, as well as being a member of al Qaeda`s Hamburg-cell. But Federal Chief Prosecutor Walter Hemberger announced shortly after the verdict that he would appeal the decision. "We are convinced that the defendant is guilty of membership in a terror organization and abetment of murder," Hemberger said. According to reports, the presiding judge in court said Mzoudi had been acquitted for a lack of evidence, not lack of conviction. The Moroccan is the second suspect worldwide to have stood trial over the 2001 terror attacks. In December, Mzoudi filed for political asylum in Germany, fearing that he could fall into the hands of the Americans in case of a deportation to Morocco. He case is still pending. 2052/NB/210 END
