Pakistan raises punishment for terrorism financing

Islamabad, Jan 10, IRNA -- Pakistan on Saturday approved amendments to the Anti Terrorist Act 1997, in the light of UN Security Council resolutions, raising the minimum and maximum punishment for offenses relating to financing of terrorism and making it a non-bailable offense, an official statement said. The amendments, approved by the cabinet, said that any individual or entity involved in financing of terrorism shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term of four to ten years. "Financing of terrorism shall be a non-bailable offense," it added. According to the statement, societies and other institutions which have a potential to act as conduits for such financing shall be obliged to establish bank accounts and maintain information about their employees and clients.
