No new terror warning in UK, says police chief
IRNA
London, Dec 23, IRNA - London`s Metropolitan Police Commissioner said Tuesday urged the British public to be vigilant to potential terrorist activity over the Christmas period but denied he had been in receipt of any warnings similar to those in the US. The security level in this country was raised six weeks ago "for good reason" when necessary actions were taken, Sir John Stevens said. "There is an immense amount of activity going on even as I speak in terms of ensuring that people`s security is there and more of that will go on over Christmas and the New Year," he said in an interview with BBC radio. US homeland security director Tom Ridge has warned that terrorists were planning attacks over Christmas in America similar in scale to September 11, 2001. The British police chief said that the threat to security "different in terms of suicide attacks" and that activity and the actual threat had taken a "quantum leap since September 11." Asked whether the security services had prevented terrorist incidents in Britain over the last year, he said there was "no doubt about that." The hard work has "been successful, but we must not be complacent," he said. London`s Evening Standard reported Tuesday that Scotland Yard had commissioned a hi-tech device, used during US President George W Bush`s visit to Britain, which is said to be able to detect suicide bombers. The detector can spot the components of a bomb even when it is hidden under clothing and police believe it could prove to be the first really effective device against suicide bombers, the paper said.
