91 terror suspect released, German press baffled
IRNA
Berlin, Dec 12, IRNA -- In a spectacular twist to a Hamburg terror trial, a German court on Thursday ordered the release from custody of a Moroccan accused of assistance in the September 11 attacks. The release of the suspect, 31-year-old student Abdelghani Mzoudi, came after Germany`s Federal Crime Office unexpectedly introduced new evidence suggesting Mzoudi was not involved in the 9/11 plot. The charges, accessory to the murders of over 3,000 people in New York and Washington and membership in a terrorist organization, were not lifted and the trial was adjourned. The German press was visibly baffled over the developments, with the Berliner Zeitung suggesting that the "last-minute" rescue of the defendant a la "Hollywood" looked like it had been "staged." The source of the ground breaking evidence leading to Mzoudi`s release was not named - much to the distress of the media -- but the latest developments could also have an effect on other such cases in the USA and Germany. The Moroccan is the second suspect worldwide to stand trial over the 2001 suicide attacks. VKP/213 END
