Al-Qaeda suspect held in Pakistan
IRNA
Islamabad, Nov 14, IRNA -- Pakistan law-enforcing and intelligence agencies detained an Arab national in the northern city of Peshawar on suspicion of links to Al-Qaeda, reports said Friday. According to daily `The News,` the arrested man identified himself as Abid bin Ibad after exhaustive interrogation. Initially, Ibad maintained that he was Abdul Aziz, son of Abdul Ghaffar, from Afghanistan`s Nuristan province. He began speaking perfect Arabic after a while and disclosed his Egyptian nationality. Abid bin Ibad was listed previously among the ranking al-Qaeda members. It also wasn`t clear if this was his real name. Most al-Qaeda members use many names to hide their identity. There were also reports of FBI`s involvement in the operation but officials of the law-enforcing agencies didn`t confirm any such report. It was learnt that Abid bin Ibad was under surveillance in recent days. The FBI had reportedly listened his satellite phone calls to suspected al-Qaeda people and traced out his house. A satellite phone, a computer, CDs and some documents were also recovered from Abid bin Ibad`s home. The suspect is now being interrogated in Peshawar by the Joint Interrogation Team. Pakistan say it has arrested more than 500 Taliban and al-Qaeda suspects since the US military launched an operation in Afghanistan two years ago. TK/TSH/216 End
