INTRO: Much of the Eastern Seaboard of the United States went dark Thursday afternoon. From VOA's New York bureau, Barbara Schoetzau has the report.

TEXT: Just before the evening rush hour at about 4:30 (EDT), the lights went out and computers stopped and elevators and subways stalled, leaving thousands of people stranded. People swarmed over bridges connecting Manhattan to the outer boroughs. The blackout affected airports, hospitals and most channels of communication.

So far, there is no word on the cause. But New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that the overloading of a large power grid, which feeds electricity to areas as far away as Detroit and Ontario, Canada may be responsible. (SIGNED)
