INTRO: The United States lowered its terrorist alert level Friday after intelligence officials concluded that the threat of an imminent attack has subsided. National correspondent Jim Malone has more.

TEXT: The Bush administration dropped the color-coded alert level from orange, signifying a high risk of terrorist attack, back down to yellow, indicating only an elevated risk of attack.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security in Washington said that U-S intelligence officials had concluded that the number of indicators and warnings that had earlier suggested an imminent attack have now decreased.

U-S officials had been particularly concerned about the possibility of attacks during last weekend's Memorial Day Holiday.

The alert level was raised on May 20th in the aftermath of terrorist bombings in Saudi Arabia and Morocco.

At that time, Homeland Security Chief Tom Ridge said that there was concern the suicide attacks might spread to include U-S targets. (Signed)
