Lockheed Martin Teams with Cogent Systems for UK's Largest Criminal Identification Technology Services Contract

IT firms' emerging technologies experiences are critical to IDENT1 programme success

LONDON,UK, May 29th, 2003 -- Lockheed Martin, a global information technology systems integrator, today announced a teaming agreement with current National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) technology provider Cogent Systems to pursue the UK's future integrated justice programme IDENT1. First awarded for development in 1995, NAFIS provides a central fingerprint database that can be addressed by any police force in England and Wales. If selected for the new IDENT1 programme, scheduled for award this year, Lockheed Martin will perform systems integration tasks similar to those accomplished for the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS). Cogent will provide finger and palm print identification technology that is three generations evolved from the Cogent technology supplied during the original NAFIS procurement.

Lockheed Martin was the integrator for the IAFIS programme and continues to operate, maintain and provide technology refreshment for the FBI criminal justice information services that contain fingerprint and criminal history information on more than 43 million individuals. "Our systems will enhance the capability of the front-line constabularies through existing and emerging technology," said Graham McIntyre, managing director of Lockheed Martin UK-Information Systems, located at Hertford. "Efficient use of the existing NAFIS technology combined with implementation of new technologies will provide significant savings annually through productivity enhancements. Additionally, we will be able to introduce new identification technologies that will aid the police in their crime fighting mission."
