Text: Powell Extends America's Sympathies to Families of Casablanca Attacks
(Says U.S. will stand with Morocco against terrorist threat) (270) Secretary of State Colin Powell, in a statement issued May 17, condemned the terrorist attacks in Casablanca and said that U.S. officials are communicating with the highest levels of the Moroccan Government to convey condolences and offer assistance. "The United States of America will continue to stand together with Morocco against this threat to both our nations and all peace-loving people," Powell said. Following is the text of the statement from Secretary Powell: (begin text) Department of State Secretary Colin L. Powell Washington, DC May 17, 2003 Statement on Terrorist Bombings in Casablanca, Morocco The United States of America condemns in the strongest possible terms the despicable terrorist bombings conducted in Casablanca, Morocco last night. On behalf of the American people, I wish to extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims of these attacks, and express our hopes for a speedy recovery for the injured. We are communicating with Moroccan officials at the highest levels to convey these sentiments, and to offer whatever assistance we can in this time of sorrow and grief. The United States of America and the Kingdom of Morocco have had a long and enduring friendship for more than two centuries. We deeply appreciate the leadership shown by King Mohamed VI and the Kingdom of Morocco in the international campaign against terrorism, and the United States of America will continue to stand together with Morocco against this threat to both our nations and all peace-loving people.
