IAI's Tamam Division Delivers a Lightweight Observation System to Escambia County Sheriff's Office in Pensacola, Florida

Apr 8, 2003

Proven System is installed on Helicopters to Assist in Airborne Law Enforcement and Homeland Security Missions

The POP-200, a modular, lightweight, gyro stabilized day / night observation system, has been procured and installed on OH-58 helicopters.

Industries Tamam Division includes a high performance Focal Plane Array thermal imager (FLIR), a color CCD TV camera, automatic video tracking and a laser pointer. The POP200 will be used by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office Aviation Division for various missions related to law enforcement and homeland security.

Tamam's POP200 has been purchased by various law enforcement agencies and is currently being tested and evaluated by additional police forces and sheriff's offices for uses on their helicopters.

The POP200 is based on a unique plug-in slice concept. The slice contains the optronic sensors which can be easily replaced in the field within minutes, without the need for alignment or adjustment. This slice concept also allows for easy upgrades whenever new sensor slices are introduced.

A single observer, using a hand control unit and a video monitor, operates the system. An on board mapping system is also installed on the helicopter.

The system's electronics is contained within the POP200 turret thus allowing for easy mounting and maintenance. Installation on the helicopter is performed with the standard dovetail mount. The total weight of the system is less than 16 Kg (35 lb).

IAI's Tamam Division is a world leader in developing optronic sensors for use on airborne platforms. Hundreds of Tamam's systems are in service with the U.S. military and international armed forces and security agencies throughout the world.
