V-O-A Correspondent Alisha Ryu has the details from Kuwait City. TEXT: A judge handed down two sentences to the convicted policeman, Kahlid Al-Shimmiri: 10 years for attempted murder and five years for illegally possessing a firearm. The defendant had earlier issued an insanity plea in the trial, which began on February 5th. His attorney called Wednesday's verdict unfair, saying the judge did not review the evidence thoroughly. Al-Shimmiri was convicted of shooting two U-S soldiers after he stopped their civilian vehicle outside Kuwait City last December. One soldier was shot in the arm and the other in the face. Both men survived the attack. The December shooting is one of a string of attacks and threats against U-S troops and other Americans in Kuwait. In January, a U-S computer contractor was killed and another American wounded when they were ambushed on a road leading to a U-S military base in northern Kuwait. A Kuwaiti civil servant, arrested in connection with that shooting, is scheduled to go on trial on March 21st. (Signed) NEB/AR/KL/KBK |
