/// UPDATING TO INCLUDE FLEISCHER ACTUALITY ///

INTRO: The White House says the arrest of a top al-Qaida operative is a very serious development, and a blow to the terrorist network. V-O-A's Paula Wolfson reports, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11th, 2001, attack on the United States, was captured Saturday in Pakistan.

TEXT: White House Spokesman Ari Fleischer says the arrest will have a big impact on terrorist operations.

/// FLEISCHER ACT ///

This is a very serious development and a blow to al-Qaida.

/// END ACT ///

Mr. Fleischer also praises the role played by Pakistan, saying President Bush is very grateful for the action taken by the Pakistani government.

/// FLEISCHER ACT ///

The president is appreciative to Pakistan for the fine efforts they have been carrying out in the war against terror, and their fine work in this most recent success.

/// END ACT ///

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed was arrested along with two other suspects by Pakistani police in Rawalpindi, not far from Islamabad.

During a session with reporters, Mr. Fleischer was asked if his capture might aid the hunt for al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden. He said it is impossible to guess, but added the arrest could provide valuable information about the terrorist network. (signed)
