BAE SYSTEMS selected on United States Coastguard Modernisation Team

16 Oct 2002

BAE Systems begins work this month on a $48.6 million contract from General Dynamics Decision Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics, to provide vessel communication systems for the U.S. Coast Guard's National Distress and Response System Modernization Project (NDRSMP), called "Rescue 21."

Rescue 21 will equip the U.S. Coast Guard with the modern tools to detect mayday calls from boaters, pinpoint the location of the source and co-ordinate rescue operations along the U.S. coastline and major interior waterways.

"BAE Systems is extremely pleased to support General Dynamics on this critical Coast Guard programme," said Randy Averitte, BAE Systems Homeland Security Systems programme director. "In addition to providing enhanced maritime safety, Rescue 21 provides greatly enhanced situational awareness and connectivity to Federal, State, and local public safety and law enforcement agencies and will be an integral element of our nation's homeland security initiative."

The BAE Systems team will perform the vessel communication system and installation design; develop the vessel mission software; perform vessel surveys; remove legacy equipment; and install and test the new NDRSMP communications systems on the vessels.

BAE Systems Integrated Defense Solutions, headquartered in Austin, Texas, leads the Mobile Systems Integrated Product Team (IPT) within the General Dynamics program to modernise the communications systems aboard more than 650 USGC vessels and is supported by BAE Systems Electronic Systems in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Bob Swanson, president of BAE Systems Integrated Defense Solutions, said, "The Rescue 21 program draws on expertise from across BAE Systems to provide a system solution that enhances the ability of the Coast Guard to execute their mission."

Program management, systems engineering and software development will be managed in Austin, Texas with the vessel installation design, fabrication, and installation management performed at the Chesapeake facility. The modernisation is expected to be completed by September 2006.
