General Dynamics Leads Team Competing for Coast Guard Systems Integration Project
U.S. Coast Guard Targets Search and Rescue with Expansive Modernization Effort
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The U.S. Coast Guard wants to greatly enhance distress communications coverage, create a better means to identify distress caller position and increase tracking to 20 nautical miles off the U.S. coastline. General Dynamics Decision Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), announced today that it is leading a team to compete for the full-scale development, production, deployment and support of the modernization project.
The National Distress and Response System Modernization Project (NDRSMP) is expected to increase coverage in all U.S. coastal and Great Lakes regions and greatly improve both the safety of seafarers and the effectiveness of Coast Guard search and rescue efforts. It also will provide a means to bridge existing gaps in communication between Coast Guard facilities, and deliver reliable two-way voice and data communications among Coast Guard groups, aircraft and vessels, as well as between the Coast Guard, other government agencies and the maritime public.
“We want to help the Coast Guard save lives by taking the search out of ‘search and rescue,’” said Mark Fried, president of General Dynamics Decision Systems. “By bringing 21st century communications and information technology to significantly improve situational awareness, we can equip the Coast Guard with the necessary tools to address maritime safety and other critical security and safety concerns.”
In recent months the Coast Guard has shifted its mission emphasis, resulting in a substantial increase in patrol and security missions. Under President Bush’s proposed government realignment, the U.S. Coast Guard would fall under the newly created Department of Homeland Security.
Joining the General Dynamics team are other industry leaders with relevant Coast Guard program experience.
