EADS Participant in Team Selected To Execute U.S. Coast Guard DEEPWATER Program
Amsterdam/Washington D.C., 27 June 2002
EADS, one of the world’s leading defence and aerospace companies, is a participant in a team of defence contractors selected to work on the U.S. Coast Guard’s Deepwater Capability Replacement Program “Deepwater”.
The Deepwater Program addresses the growing obsolescence of a significant portion of the Coast Guard’s Deepwater equipment. Through the Deepwater Program, the Coast Guard seeks to acquire a fully integrated system of assets – from ships to aircraft to an integrated communications and sensor system – which best fulfills its missions at reasonable operating and life-cycle costs. The contract is valued at $11 billion over a 20-year period. The program´s total potential value over three dedades is estimated at approximately $17 billion.
The EADS CEOs, Philippe Camus and Rainer Hertrich said, “We are very pleased that EADS is playing an important role in the U.S. Coast Guard’s Deepwater Program. Our contribution to Deepwater as part of the winning team of defence companies is a solid step forward in augmenting our presence in the U.S., and demonstrating EADS’ commitment to work with the U.S. in the area of homeland security.” The selected team is one of three who had submitted proposals to the U.S. Coast Guard. The winning group is led by Integrated Coast Guard Systems (ICGS), a joint venture between Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems-Surface Systems and Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, a team bringing together 100 U.S. companies and four international companies, including EADS.
The CEOs added, “EADS is happy to be successfully partnered with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and the rest of the team on the Deepwater program. We look forward to continued participation in U.S. defence and homeland security programs and are eager to continue building strong relationships with the U.S. industry.“
EADS is a major sub-contractor to ICGS. Three business units of EADS are involved in the program. EADS Defence and Civil Systems is a supplier for radar components, EADS’ Eurocopter will upgrade and modernize the existing U.S. Coast Guard fleet of 96 HH-65A helicopters, and EADS CASA will provide a new fleet of CN-235MPA aircraft equipped with the latest state of the art surveillance mission system (FITS). As part of the contract, EADS CASA will also provide a full in-service support for the life of the program.
With revenues amounting to EUR 30.8 billion in 2001 and a workforce of over 100,000, EADS is the largest European aerospace company and the No 2 worldwide. It is active in the sectors of commercial aircraft, helicopters, space, military transport and combat aircraft as well as defence technology and services. Among others, EADS holds 80 percent of Airbus, 75 percent of the space company Astrium, 100 percent of the helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, 43 percent in the Eurofighter programme and 37.5 percent in the missile company MBDA.
