Israel Aircraft Industries' Bedek Aviation Group Developed an Enhanced Flight Deck Bulkhead & Door Security System
Feb 27, 2002
Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI)'s Bedek Aviation Group is leading a joint venture for the development of an enhanced flight deck bulkhead and door security system, named: Aircraft Cockpit Enhanced Forced Entry Door (ACEFED System) for aircraft Flight Decks. The purpose of the system is to eliminate forced entry, takeover and firearm shooting carried out by hostile subjects towards the cockpit and through it. The possibility of a hostile takeover aboard a commercial flight has been more significant since September 11th acts of terror that took place in the US.
For the mission of developing and marketing the new door security system, Israel Aircraft Industries joined with "Arkia" - an experienced Israeli airliner, Mul-T-Lock Security products Ltd. ? a leading inventor and producer of world known security products, and S.G.D Engineering Ltd. ? leaders in aviation engineering and aircraft upgrade. "Arkia" already uses earlier cockpit door security systems manufactured by IAI, and will use the new security system as well.
The new Aircraft Cockpit Enhanced Forced Entry Door (ACEFED) System meets all of the new Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) requirements, issued after Sept. 11th, for enhancement of cockpit door, that separates the cockpit from the passenger cabin. The system proposed by IAI provides optimal protection to the cockpit and its crew.
ACEFED System consists of an enhanced door, capable of preventing ballistic penetration, and a protected door frame (jambs and header). The door is strengthened to resist an energy blast of up to 300 Joules.
Furthermore, the new ACEFED System includes a unique patented solution in the case of a pressurization loss, both in the cockpit and in the passenger cabin. In loss of pressurization, the cockpit door usually brakes off its hinges. This failure may cause severe damage to the fuselage and may harm passengers and crew aboard. Therefore, IAI has developed a unique decompression activated mechanism for equalizing cabin pressure in the aircraft. This mechanism senses decompression and has the ability to respond within milliseconds by opening the door or sliding window and louvres. This sophisticated mechanism is an integral part of the ACEFED system, and, is also bulletproof. The mechanism aids in distributing sudden pressure impacted on the door.
In addition to the utilization of the new Aircraft Cockpit Enhanced Forced Entry Door System aboard "Arkia"?s aircraft, IAI is in advanced negotiations with a number of foreign airlines. The new ACEFED system is designed to fit most commercial aircraft types available today.
