INTRO: Israel has deported an American citizen it suspected of channeling money to terrorists connected to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network. V-O-A Correspondent Nick Simeone tells us the suspect is said to have spent time in Afghanistan.

TEXT: Israel identifies the American as 34 year-old Khaled Nazem Diyab who it says was arrested when he arrived in Israel last month, on suspicion of transferring money to terrorists groups associated with al-Qaida.

A statement released by the Israeli government says the American has been involved in charity work and lived in the Gulf nation of Qatar in recent months -- but also spent time in Afghanistan where he is said to have maintained close contact with groups that identify with the former Taleban government.

The Israeli government is not saying what led to the American's arrest but it decided to keep the matter quiet until authorities had concluded their investigation and deported him without charge. A U-S official says there is no evidence the American was involved in any terrorist activity. (SIGNED)
