Rizzani de Eccher (USA) in Miami Beach, FL won a $44.8 million firm-fixed-price contract for the design and construction of a facility replacement at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The company, which is a unit of Italian construction firm Rizzani de Eccher, expects to complete construction by Dec 30/10. US Army Corps of Engineers’ Transatlantic Programs Center in Winchester, VA received 8 bids for the contract (W912ER-09-C-0033).

Al Udeid Air Base is a military base located west of Doha, Qatar…

Wikipedia says Al Udeid Air Base is host to a forward headquarters of US Central Command and home to No. 83 Expeditionary Air Group RAF and the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing of the USAF.

According to Globalsecurity.org, Al Udeid Air Base was built at a cost of more than a billion dollars. Its runway is the longest in the Persian Gulf. The facility’s shelters can accommodate nearly 100 aircraft, more than needed by the Qatari Air Force, which has only a dozen fighters. The facility is owned and operated by the Qatari armed forces.

Qatar is situated halfway along the west coast of the Persian Gulf, on the eastern side of the Arabian peninsula. The present population is estimated at 600,000 inhabitants, most of whom reside in Doha, the capital city. It is a peninsula that extends northward covering an area of 11,437 square kilometers, as well as a number of islands in the coastal waters of the peninsula. The terrain is generally flat. However, there are some hills and sand dunes which reach an altitude of 40 meters above sea level in the areas of Dukhan and Jebel Fuwairit in the western and northern parts of the country and Khor Al-Udeid in the south.
