Mid Eastern Builders to Build Fuel Storage Tanks at USN's Craney Island Terminal
Mid Eastern Builders in Chesapeake, VA won a $36.4 million firm-fixed-price contract for replacement of fuel storage tanks at Craney Island Fuel Terminal in Portsmouth, VA. Mid Eastern Builders will demolition the 19 aged bulk storage tanks and build 6 new tanks.
The company expects to complete the work by August 2012. The contract was competitively procured via the Navy Electronic Commerce Online website, with 6 proposals received by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, VA (N40085-09-C-5037). The Craney Island Fuel Terminal possesses 1,100 acres of above- and below-ground fuel storage tanks. The terminal supports naval fuel storage operations within the region and includes several large capacity fuel storage tanks, above- and below-grade piping, fuel pump stations and dispensing systems, and pier side fuel facilities.
The Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Norfolk’s Fuel Department operates 3 government owned and contractor operated fuel terminals and provides centralize regional support/management of US Navy petroleum, oils and lubricant (POL) services. The primary terminal is located in Portsmouth, VA on Craney Island, with other terminals located in Naval Station Norfolk, VA and in Yorktown, VA. The Fuel Department provides POL related service to approximately 256 fleet and industrial customers with an average throughput of 15 million barrels of fuel per year. Facilities include 60 storage tanks and over 100 miles of pipeline.
