Croman Gets $11.9M Order to Provide Airlift to Hawaiian Military Ranges
Croman Corp., a small business based in White City, OR received an $11.9 million modification to a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract (N00019-06-D-0005) to provide airlift and recovery functions in support of all Hawaiian military ranges. In addition, this modification provides for utility/ transport missions to carry passengers/ cargo and range clearing operations in the Hawaiian Operating Area.
Croman will perform the work in Barking Sands in Kauai, Hawaii, and expects to complete the work by August 2010. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, MD manages the contract. The Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) is located at Barking Sands…
PMRF is the world’s largest instrumented multi-environment range capable of supporting surface, subsurface, air, and space operations simultaneously. There are over 1,100 square miles of instrumented underwater range and over 42,000 square miles of controlled airspace. This enables PMRF to support operations which vary from small, single-unit exercises up to large-scale, multiple-unit battle group scenarios.
PMRF is the lead range in the Pacific for Aegis Combat System Ship Qualification Training, according to Globalsecurity.org. PMRF puts new Aegis platforms through extensive testing and training prior to initial deployment. Collocated with the Sandia National Laboratory Kauai Test Facility, PMRF is the lead range for launching the Strategic Target System. No other range has the unencroached geographic expanse necessary to support wide area defense sensor and cooperative engagement capability testing.
Located in Hawaii on the western shores of the Island of Kauai, the PMRF range includes broad ocean areas to the north, south, and west with varying water depths from 400 to 2,500 fathoms. The nearest town, Kekaha, is 8 miles to the south and east. Supporting instrumentation sites at Makaha Ridge and Kokee Park overlook the vast ocean range areas to the west and north Kauai.
