$9.8M to BAE Systems for C-130T Electronic Flight Bags
BAE Systems Technology Solutions and Services in Rockville, MD received a $9.8 million modification to a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/ indefinite-quantity contract (N00421-06-D-0038) for the procurement and installation of 55 electronic flight bags with civil GPS capabilities for the C-130T transport aircraft. Under this modification, BAE Systems will also provide 45 install kits, 23 instrument display systems and 45 engine instrument display systems. BAE Systems will perform the work in Crestview, FL (90 percent) and California, MD (10 percent) and expects to complete it by September 2011. The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division in Patuxent River, MD manages the contract.

The electronic flight bag, explains Wikipedia, is an electronic information management device that helps flight crews perform flight management tasks. It is a general purpose computing platform intended to replace paper-based reference material found in the pilot’s carry-on flight bag, such as the aircraft operating manual, aircrew operating manual, and navigational charts. In addition, the EFB can host software applications to automate other functions normally conducted manually, such as performance take-off calculations. New technologies, such as real-time satellite weather and integration with GPS, have further expanded its capabilities.
The C-130T is the U.S. Navy’s and U.S. Marine Corps’ version of the Hercules. It has more advanced avionics than the C-130R model. The C-130R and C-130T are derivatives of the C-130H, not the C-130J. The C-130T can be configured to provide transportation of personnel or cargo, according to Globalsecurity.org. Delivery of cargo may be accomplished by parachute, low level fly-by ground extraction, or landing. The aircraft can be used as tactical transports and can be converted readily for ambulance or aerial delivery missions. As a tactical transport, the C-130T can carry 92 ground troops or 64 paratroopers and equipment. It can be configured as a medical evacuation platform capable of carrying 74 litters. The C-130T can land and takeoff on short runways and can be used on primitive landing strips in advanced base areas.
