Alameda Soldier Killed in Iraq

U.S. Army Specialist Michael T. Manibog, 31, of Alameda was killed Feb. 8, along with four other soldiers after their vehicle struck a roadside bomb in Taji, Iraq. The four died later of wounds suffered in the explosion, according to the Department of Defense. Manibog was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, of the 25th Infantry Division, based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Manibog joined the Army in August of 2005.

The Stryker vehicle, a new generation armored personnel carrier is a medium-weight, eight-wheel vehicle that can carry 11 soldiers and weapons at speeds of more than 60 miles an hour, according to Globalsecurity.org. In addition to the four killed, six others were wounded when the vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. At least 3,960 members of the U.S. Armed Forces have been killed in Iraq since the U.S. launched invasion in 2003, according to an Associated Press tally.
