Iraq: One U.S. soldier killed, 1 wounded

BAGHDAD (AP) — One U.S. soldier was killed by a rocket or mortar attack on a convoy support center south of Baghdad, the military said Friday.
The soldier, who was killed Thursday, was assigned to the 316th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, according to a brief statement. Another soldier was wounded and evacuated to a military hospital, it said.

The statement said only that the soldiers were attacked by indirect fire, the military term for a rocket or mortar attack, at Convoy Support Center Scania, which according to GlobalSecurity.org is a truck stop about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Baghdad.

Identities were not released pending notification of relatives.

The death raised to at least 39 U.S. troop deaths in January and 3,943 members of the U.S. military who have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.
