Historic Moments

1971

* George Washington works with French-born Anerican architect Pierre Charles L'Enfant to design the basic plans for the new federal city and the president's residence.

* L'Enfant is dismissed by Washington for insubordination. An architectural competition is held for the design of the President's House. Irish-born architect James Hoban wins.

1800

* Nov. 1: The second president, John Adams, and first lady, Abigail, move into the unfinished President's House.

1807

* Front view of the President's House in Washington, 1807. The earliest known published image of the White House. Construction of the house is completed in 1809. Total cost: $232,372.

GRAPHIC: The artist and engraver if this image is unknown; 1814 * Aug. 14: British troops invade Washington and set fire to the White House and other public buildings. The outer walls are all that is left of the residence. 1820 * The south and north porticoes are constructed in 1824 and 1829. With the completion of the porticoes, the image of the White House is as we know it today. 1900s; * Architect Charles F. McKim begins major renovations to the house. Offices from the second floor of the residence are moved to separate buildings, creating a new West Wing office fro receiving guests. The restoration preserves the White House as the home of the president. Today; * The exterior stone walls are those first put in place when construction began on the White House in 1792.
