ASK THE TRIB: Dwellings draw readers' questions
Q: How many countries are there in the world today and what are the names of the ones which belong to the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq?
A: According to the "Financial Times World Desk Reference (2004)," there are 193 recognized independent states in the international community. Donald Rumsfeld of the Department of Defense was quoted in a Sept. 7 interview as saying there are between 30 and 32 participating countries in Iraq. Although the countries were not specifically named in his interview, the countries named on the globalsecurity.org Web site dated Sept. 21 were Albania, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Thailand, Tonga, United Kingdom and Ukraine. These numbers will continue to fluctuate as nations withdraw or add troops in Iraq.
