Governor, first lady host fiesta for Guam military personnel

By Steve Limtiaco

The governor and the first lady are in Japan for an annual travel conference, but they made a side trip Thursday to the Army's Camp Zama, where the governor was born in 1957.

Gov. Felix Camacho and first lady Joann Camacho hosted a Chamorro fiesta and cultural show at the base for military personnel from Guam. Also invited were Guam military personnel from nearby U.S. bases in Japan.

"We are proud of the sacrifices our sons and daughters make for our great country," the governor is quoted as saying in a written statement from his office. "This fiesta is just a little form of appreciation on behalf of the people of Guam for all they do in the name of our island and our country."

Cultural dancers who were flown to Japan for the travel conference performed at the fiesta, according to the governor's office, and the Camachos gave presents to the troops, including coconut candy and guyuria.

The governor was born at the base while his father was serving there.

A delegation of about 40 people from Guam is in Yokohama to promote the island at the Japan Association of Travel Agents World Fair 2003, which ends Sunday.

According to the Globalsecurity.org Web site, Camp Zama is located about 25 miles southwest of central Tokyo.

It is home to the Army's Japan/9th Theater Army Area Command, the 17th Area Support Group, the United Nations Command (Rear), the 500th Military Intelligence Brigade, the Japan Engineer District, the 78th Signal Battalion, the 3rd Engineer Group of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and other units.
