OPINION; Letters to the Editor

Poor performance

The Times' April 24 editorial stating that the Patriot missile had proved itself overlooks major and expensive glitches.

The Patriot is still an overpriced and poor-performing weapon. It is too dangerous for our pilots.

Why hasn't a better explanation been provided about the Patriot that down two coalition aircraft?

I suspect there never will be an explanation because that would be an admission of a multimillion-dollar failure, a cover-up by Army officials, contractors and weapons-system buyers in the Pentagon.

An Associated Press story (April 23) included this statement from John Pike, a defense analyst with GlobalSecurity.org: "Obviously the biggest technological disappointment is the Patriot."
