Iraq - Bridges Complicate U.S. Approach To Baghdad, Says Defense Analyst Mar 19/Periscope.
PERISCOPE -- GlobalSecurity.org Director John Pike says that U.S. troops negotiating the Euphrates River to reach Baghdad would be better served by not crossing a major bridge at An Nasiriyah in southern Iraq.
Speaking at a Periscope Emergency Conference concerning the pending invasion of Iraq, Pike suggested that route would take U.S. forces through extremely inhospitable terrain and make them more vulnerable to attack. Instead, by fording the river further north at Karbala or Al Mousayyid, the troops could move largely unopposed through more benign territory.
More information and tapes of the conference, which also feature Stratfor chairman Dr. George Friedman and prominent defense analyst and author Norman Polmar, are available from Periscope for $ 99.95. Contact mail: jlovece@ucg.com
