EYE IN SKY REVEALS OUR BOMBERS

By NILES LATHEM

Diego Garcia, BIOT

WASHINGTON - Dramatic new satellite photos surfaced yesterday showing long-range U.S. bombers - apparently ready to strike Iraq on a moment's notice - poised for action at the Diego Garcia air base.

The images taken over the British-controlled island in the Indian Ocean on Nov. 24 and 26 by the Israeli commercial satellite company ImageSat International present the most compelling evidence yet of the scope of the buildup of U.S. firepower. The new photos show B-52 and B-1 heavy bombers capable of launching tons of high-tech smart bombs, along with massive cargo aircraft flying in equipment.

They also reveal that special portable environmental shelters have been erected at Diego Garcia to house the B-2 "Stealth" bomber, the bat-winged "invisible" aircraft that would play a key role in the opening phase of combat operations against Iraq.

The shelters are designed to protect from the elements the sensitive lightweight carbon skin that makes the B-2 almost invisible to radar.
