Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Secunderabad Cantonment

The Secunderabad Cantonment north of Hyderabad comprises a number of defense establishments. In 1798 an alliance signed between Hyderabad's Nizam Sikander Jah and the British East India Company made an area north of Hussain Sagar lake into a contonment, named Secunderabad after Nizam Sikander Jah. Hyderabad and Secunderabad form one of the few twin cities of the world -- Secunderabad is the northern half of the Hyderabad urban agglomeration. The cities have merged, though an imaginary line drawn across the Tank Bund is still used to distinguish between them.

The old Secunderabad of the bazaars is complemented by the modern business quarter, residential areas, and the large military cantonment, which is said to be the second largest in India. The large Parade ground marks the border between Secunderabad's business area and Secunderabad Cantonment. The red tiled roofs of the old British army buildings [Winston Churchill was stationed here as a young man] include the Army Ordnance Corps Centre, and the Electronics and Mechanical Engineering [EME] Centre. Tirumalagiri [a corruption of Tirumalagiri], on a hill now called Gunrock, is the site of a well designed and maintained military prison. The cobbled road past Gunrock goes to a small lake on the other side. Ammuguda is a railway station on the suburban line in Secunderabad, with a series of bouldery hillocks near, including the Hyderabad skyline landmark "dargah" on the hill. Around the hill are various military offices, including the College of Military Engineering (MCME).
