Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Sao Jose dos Campos

Research in the area of nuclear energy was carried out in the Air Force Technological Center (Centro de Tecnologia da Auronautica - CTA) in Sao Jose dos Campos, State of Sao Paulo.

In 1993 Brazil's Institute of Advanced Studies began developing a liquid-propelled gas dynamic laser for the enrichment of uranium at the Aerospace Technical Center (CTA) in Sao Jose dos Campos. The principle objective of the project was to create a laser beam with a 16 micron wavelength and 10 billion watts of power, which would produce enriched U-235 to be used as reactor fuel. Earlier research included the construction in 1985 of a laser powered by a supersonic wind tunnel, with a 10.6 micron wavelength and 10 watts of power, although a pulse could only be generated every half-hour.
