MANILA -- The German Embassy in Manila on Friday denied Moscow's claim that it is issuing visas to Filipinos allegedly recruited by certain entities to fight for Ukraine in the ongoing war.
The Russian news agency TASS, in a Nov. 27 report, quoted Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying that representatives of an American security company have "launched a campaign in the Philippines to recruit local citizens" for the Ukrainian army.
Zakharova further alleged that recruits who sign contracts "are issued a Schengen work visa at the consular section of the German embassy in Manila" and are listed as employed by "Berlin-based private security companies."
She further stated that upon arrival in Germany, these supposed recruits are transferred to other countries, including those within the European Union, such as Poland and Ukraine.
"We strictly refuse and deny those baseless allegations," German Ambassador to the Philippines Andreas Michael Pfaffernoschke said in a text message to the Philippine News Agency.
The envoy also explained that Schengen visas do not entitle the holder to take up employment in the Schengen area.
"A national visa is required to take up employment. The embassy only issues visas for employment in Germany," he said.
As of this posting, the Department of Foreign Affairs and the embassies of the US and Ukraine in Manila have yet to issue official statements when asked to comment on the subject. (PNA)
