During his working visit to Japan to participate in the Third Conference on Humanitarian Mine Action (UMAC 2025) in Tokyo, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko took part in a series of meetings and events aimed at deepening Ukraine-Japan cooperation in the fields of security, defence, and post-war recovery.
Together with First Deputy Minister of Defence of Ukraine Ivan Havryliuk, a meeting was held with Deputy Minister of Defence of Japan Koji Kano. The parties discussed further avenues of interaction in the military-technical sphere and humanitarian demining, and confirmed their mutual commitment to expanding practical cooperation between the defence institutions of both countries.
The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan for its consistent support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the non-lethal assistance provided to Ukraine's Defence Forces — in particular, the transfer of 30 vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including ½-ton trucks and high-mobility transport vehicles. The latest batch of this equipment was delivered to Ukraine on 14 October 2025.
As part of the visit, Olexandr Mischenko also took part in negotiations with the management of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, including Masahiko Arai, Vice President of the Defence and Space Systems Division. The meeting focused on the prospects for implementing joint projects in the field of defence and technical cooperation.
The Ukrainian delegation visited the Japan Self-Defence Forces Central Hospital, where Ukrainian servicemen who sustained severe injuries in combat are undergoing rehabilitation and prosthetics. The delegation expressed support and gratitude to the Ukrainian heroes for their strength, courage and resilience in resisting Russian aggression. Japanese partners are providing substantial assistance in the medical rehabilitation of Ukrainian defenders, including through the production and provision of bionic prostheses by Japanese companies.
In addition, Olexandr Mischenko attended the opening of the exhibition "For the Sake of a Letter", dedicated to the theme of letters as a symbol of connection and support among Ukrainians separated by Russia's war of aggression — in particular, letters addressed to Ukrainian prisoners of war awaiting their return home. The exhibition was organized by the Ukrainian House in Japan and the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan, with the support of Pasona Group.
