Ukrainian soldiers are being trained and equipped through 'Operation Legio'. The joint initiative was formalized today with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Brussels.
'This marks an important step in the cooperation between Allies to support Ukraine's defence capabilities. Ukraine needs to strengthen its army with both education and equipment. Through this cooperation we are contributing to just that', said Norwegian Minister of Defence Tore O. Sandvik.
The signing took place during the NATO Defence Ministerial meeting in Brussels on 15 October. The cooperation agreement was signed by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Sweden and Ukraine.
With this agreement, the participating countries contribute with training, equipment and expertise that makes it possible to build and strengthen a Ukrainian brigade in line with modern standards and NATO practices.
Norway has taken the lead in the work. The cooperation takes place at both the political and military levels and facilitates close coordination between all participating countries. The Norwegian contribution amounts to approximately 10 billion kroner.
'This cooperation helps strengthen Ukraine's defence and sends a clear message of our long-term commitment to the country's sovereignty and security', said the Minister of Defence. In addition, it is a unique opportunity for us to learn from Ukraine's combat experiences.
On October 1, the Defence Ministers of Norway and Poland opened the training location for this cooperation, Camp Jomsborg, in South-Eastern Poland. Here, Nordic and Baltic forces are already training soldiers and officers for the Ukrainian army.
