When asked to comment on Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te's recent opposition to the Kuomintang (KMT)'s proposed amendment to protect the political participation rights of mainland spouses, and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) official Cho Jung-tai's claimed that the so-called "Nationality Act amendment" involves a "dual loyalty issue," State Council Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhang Han said at Wednesday's press conference that mainland spouses are family members and relatives of Taiwan compatriots, as well as contributors and builders of Taiwan society. They should be recognized and respected and their legitimate rights and interests, including participation in public affairs and political processes, should be safeguarded.
Zhang noted that out of its inherent "Taiwan independence" nature, the DPP authorities openly peddle the "two-state theory" rhetoric, arbitrarily deprive mainland spouses of their legitimate rights, suppress and bully the mainland spouse community, and continually challenge the historical and legal fact that both sides of the Straits belong to one China.
Zhang said that "we firmly condemn this," sternly warning the DPP authorities that any acts or tricks that undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits and harm the interests of compatriots on both sides will only lead to disastrous consequences for themselves.
The spokesperson stressed that as for the "Taiwan independence" henchmen and accomplices who persecute mainland spouses, mainland will never let them off lightly and will hold them accountable and punish them in accordance with the law.
