The PLA Daily, a newspaper affiliated with the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), published on Sunday an article that criticizes Japan's ambiguous and evasive response to international criticism over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks on the Taiwan question, which appeared to be an attempt to gloss over the issue.

China has in recent days repeatedly issued solemn statements and strong warnings, while concerned voices within Japan and the international community have been making admonitions and criticism against Takaichi's erroneous remarks regarding the Taiwan question. Under pressure from all sides, although Japan has verbally said that its "position remains unchanged," it has been vague about the specific content. And although it has adopted a posture of being "willing to have a dialogue" and "seeking communication," it has completely avoided mentioning any retraction of the erroneous remarks, according to the PLA Daily article.

It says that in the face of factual truth and international justice, such attempts to gloss over the issue with ambiguous words appear particularly clumsy. They only serve to fully expose the Japanese authorities' transgressive provocations and challenges to the post-war international order, and ambitions to revive militarism, and will inevitably be firmly opposed by China and the international community.

According to the article, Japan's attempts to downplay the issue with claims such as the so-called "the position remains unchanged" or "will no longer mention it" will not work.

"The Government of Japan recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China." The Sino-Japanese Joint Statement "is the foundation of the peaceful and friendly relations between the two countries, and the principles set forth in the Joint Statement must be strictly observed." The Japanese side's commitment to "continue to maintain its stand on the Taiwan question which was set forth in the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement" and "reiterated its understanding that there is one China."

The solemn commitments made by the Japanese government on the Taiwan question in the four China-Japan political documents have the force of international law and leave no room for ambiguity or misinterpretation. Regardless of which party or individual governs Japan, these commitments must be upheld and strictly observed, the article noted.

Shortly after taking office, Takaichi arrogantly threatened the possible military intervention in the Taiwan Straits, openly infringing on China's core interests and seriously hurting the Chinese people's feelings

If the Japanese side's position on the Taiwan question has not changed, it should honestly, accurately, and fully clarify its so-called "consistent position," openly and straightforwardly acknowledging that the Taiwan question is purely China's internal affair. It should not, as it is doing now, casually gloss over the matter, addressing only abstract concepts while avoiding the substance in an attempt to evade responsibility, or try to downplay and cover up Takaichi's serious erroneous remarks with a flippant "will no longer mention it" claim. Such self-deceptive and self-serving behavior is absolutely unacceptable to China, the article said.

If Japan truly wishes to develop a mutually beneficial strategic relationship with China and build constructive and stable China-Japan relations that meet the requirements of the new era, it should adhere to the spirit of the four China-Japan political documents and the political commitments it has made, immediately retract the erroneous remarks, and genuinely demonstrate its commitments to China in concrete actions, rather than reversing the accusation by demanding China to "exercise restraint" or by labeling China's legitimate countermeasures as "overreactions."

The article emphasized that Taiwan island is sacred Chinese territory, and how the Taiwan question is resolved is a matter for the Chinese people alone, not subject to any external interference. If Japan dares to use force to intervene in the Taiwan Straits, it would constitute an act of aggression, and China will resolutely exercise the right of self‑defense granted by the UN Charter and international law, firmly defending national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Japan should firmly remember that whether there is a "Taiwan contingency" is fundamentally not Japan's business. Stirring up trouble with the Taiwan question will only bring trouble upon Japan itself.

China will never allow Japan's right-wing provocateurs to turn back the wheel of history, never allow external forces to interfere in China's Taiwan region, and the international community will never allow the resurgence of Japan's militarism, the article said.

As a defeated country in World War II, Japan must deeply reflect on its history of aggression, strictly abide by relevant international laws and the provisions of its "Peace Constitution," and uphold its commitment to never wage war again, rather than abandon its commitment to peaceful development, run counter to the tide of history, or seek any pretext to attempt a return to militarism, according to the article.

The absurd logic and behavior - regarding the territory of other countries as a "condition for its own survival" - is unacceptable to the Chinese people, unacceptable to the Chinese military, and unacceptable to all peace-loving people around the world, and will ultimately lead only to a shameful defeat, the article said.
