President Xi to Trump: Taiwan's 'return' to China key to post-WW2 order

During a phone call with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping has stressed that Taiwan's "return to China" is a key part of the postwar international order.

"China and the United States once fought side by side against fascism and militarism, and should now work together to safeguard the outcomes of World War II," Xi was quoted as saying by state news agency Xinhua on Monday.

President Xi and Trump met on October 30 at the US-China summit meeting at Gimhae International Airport in South Korea, following months of trade tensions triggered by Trump's tariff policies.

After the meeting, Trump said he would cut tariffs on China, while Beijing agreed to allow the export of rare earth elements. Trump added that Beijing also agreed to buy American soybeans.

Referring to the improvement in Beijing-Washington ties, Xi warned that "confrontation hurts both."

"The facts again show that cooperation benefits both sides while confrontation hurts both," he told Trump, calling on the two countries to maintain positive momentum and promote cooperation.

The phone call comes after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said this month that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could trigger a military response from his country, triggering mass protests in Tokyo.

Beijing has sovereignty over Taiwan, and under the "One China" policy, almost all countries recognize that sovereignty, meaning they do not establish diplomatic contact with the island's secessionist government.

The US, too, claims commitment to that principle, but in violation of its own stated policy, and in an attempt to antagonize Beijing, has courted the secessionist government in Taiwan, supporting its anti-China stance and supplying it with a large cache of weaponry.

Beijing has often emphasized that the issue of the self-ruled island is a red line for the government and people of China and must not be crossed.
