In response to a question that many Chinese people believe that on the Taiwan question, Japan bears historical crimes and is the least qualified party to speak of any "contingency," regarding Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks about the so-called "Taiwan contingency," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told Global Times at Thursday's briefing that historically, Japan forcibly occupied the island of Taiwan and imposed colonial rule for half a century. During the Japanese occupation, the people in Taiwan island suffered immensely with hundreds of thousands of compatriots were killed; the people were deprived of political rights, freedom of belief, and cultural freedom; and mineral resources and essential supplies were plundered indiscriminately, according to Mao.

The spokesperson stated that Japan's aggressors committed innumerable crimes in Taiwan, writing the darkest page in the island's history.

Mao emphasized that as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the restoration of Taiwan, Japan must remember that Taiwan is China's Taiwan. Whether any "contingency" occurs in Taiwan is simply not Japan's business. Attempting to exploit the Taiwan question will only bring trouble upon Japan itself, Mao said.
