"We are willing to make every effort to strive for the peaceful reunification of both sides of the Taiwan Straits, but we will never promise to renounce the use of force, nor leave any room for any form of 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities. We will not make any compromise or concession to any external interference, and will retain the option to take all necessary measures," the Chinese Embassy in Japan posted on the social media platform X in Chinese on Monday. The post was later shared in Japanese.
Taiwan belongs to China. How to resolve the Taiwan question and realize national reunification is a matter for the Chinese people to decide. If Japan dares to interfere in China's reunification cause, or dares to attempt an armed intervention in the cross-Straits situation under the pretext of a 'survival-threatening situation,' it would be an act of aggression and definitely meet a firm response from China. We will firmly exercise our right to self-defense under the U.N. Charter and international law and defend China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, said the post.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi claimed at a Diet meeting on November 7 that the Chinese mainland's "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan. She refused to retract her remarks which imply the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Straits.
Multiple Chinese ministries and government agencies have condemned the Japanese side's related moves and remarks, warning that Japan would face a resolute response if it dared to meddle in the Taiwan question, amid ongoing backlash at home and abroad triggered by the erroneous and provocative remarks of Takaichi.
