If the island of Taiwan "would simply accept that there is only one China," tensions would cease, Cheng Li-wun, new chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party, island's largest opposition party, said in an exclusive interview with Nikkei Asia.
She also argued that only this, rather than the rapid buildup of defens spending pushed by US President, and promised by Taiwan regional leader Lai Ching-te, will guarantee survival, according to the interview published on Friday.
Cheng, who was speaking with foreign media for the first time since becoming KMT chair, made it clear that she is not sold on Lai's pledge to raise defense spending above 3 percent of the region's gross domestic product next year and to 5 percent by 2030.
"This increase is too high and too fast," she said. "Such a large rise cannot truly guarantee the security of the Taiwan Strait."
From Cheng's perspective, read the report by Nikkei Asia, it is the DPP and Lai that are jeopardizing future of the island of Taiwan.
According to Nikkei Asia, Cheng conceded that Lai has not declared de jure "independence," but argued his statements "conceal a pro-independence historical perspective and ideology." And she accused the DPP of stifling those who disagree.
She further accused Lai of exerting control over the media, the election commission, and the judicial system.
In the interview, Cheng said the DPP was trying to "de-Sinicize Taiwan," causing public "confusion and distress."
Cheng took office on November 1 after being elected chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT) party in October.
