China firmly opposes US arms sales to China's Taiwan region, this has been China's consistent and clear position, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Saturday, urging the US to exercise utmost caution in handling the Taiwan question.
After the US defense department announced an arms sale to Taiwan worth approximately $330 million, the DPP authorities of the island immediately expressed their gratitude.
In response, Chen said the US action seriously undermines China's sovereignty and security interests and sends a seriously wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatists. He urged the US to abide by the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, especially the August 17 Communique, and stop condoning and supporting "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, exercise utmost caution in handling the Taiwan question.
Pursuing "Taiwan independence" is fundamentally incompatible with peace across the Taiwan Straits. Since taking office, the Lai Ching-te authorities have constantly sought external backing, escalated militarization, and squandered the hard-earned money of the people of Taiwan, turning Taiwan region into a "powder keg" at the expense of the safety and well-being of the Taiwanese people, the spokesperson said. He added that relying on external forces to seek "independence" will only lead to a dead end. "We will take all necessary measures to firmly safeguard national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity," Chen stressed.
