In response to a Reuters inquiry on Thursday regarding the US State Department's claim that the island of Taiwan must be allowed full and equal participation when China hosts APEC next year, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that China will actively fulfill its duty as the host of APEC in 2026 and ensure the smooth participation of all sides. "On Chinese Taipei's participation in APEC, I've clearly stated China's stance," Mao added.
Mao also responded to another question concerning a senior Fijian diplomat visited Taiwan region this week who met with a senior Taiwan regional official. "China firmly opposes any form of official interactions between China's Taiwan region and countries having diplomatic ties with China. Fiji's relevant official's visit to Taiwan severely violated Fiji's political commitment to the one-China principle. China strongly deplores it and has lodged serious protests with Fiji. Taiwan region's disgraceful moves will not succeed," said Mao, the Paper reported.
Earlier, in response to media inquiry about Taiwan regional official's remarks on Wednesday that China had attached many "conditions" to Chinese Taipei's participation in next year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that participating as a regional economy under the one-China principle and abiding by the terms set forth in the relevant APEC MoU and usual practices—this is the political prerequisite for Chinese Taipei's participation in APEC.
"China's position on this issue is clear and firm," the spokesperson said.
