When asked to comment on recent reports about a latest poll conducted in Paraguay this month indicating that 58.3 percent of respondents consider it very important for Paraguay to have diplomatic relations with China, while 29.8 percent consider it somewhat important—together accounting for nearly 90 percent—and that several Paraguayan lawmakers have called on their government to establish diplomatic relations with China and sever ties with the Taiwan regional authorities, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that China has noted the relevant reports. In recent years, China has repeatedly heard strong calls from various sectors in Paraguay to develop relations with China.
The relevant poll once again demonstrates the Paraguayan people's strong expectation for the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Paraguay, said Guo.
Guo emphasized that China's reunification is an unstoppable historical trend. Maintaining so-called "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan regional authorities not only runs counter to Paraguay's fundamental and long-term interests of Paraguay and its people, but also goes against the prevailing international consensus on upholding the one-China principle.
He called on the Paraguayan government to heed the voice of its people, change course as soon as possible, stand on the right side of history, and make the correct decision to recognize the one-China principle and sever the so-called "diplomatic relations" with the Taiwan regional authorities.
