When asked about public opinion noting that the omission of the phrase "peaceful reunification" in the Communique of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the CPC—which emphasized "promoting the peaceful development of relations across the Taiwan Straits and advancing the cause of national reunification"—a mainland spokesperson on Wednesday responded that "our overarching policy toward Taiwan remains consistent and clear."
Peng Qing'en, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stated that peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems constitute the fundamental approach to resolving the Taiwan question and represent the optimal path to achieving national reunification.
We are committed to creating ample space for peaceful reunification and will pursue the prospect of peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and effort, according to the spokesperson.
Peaceful reunification constitutes the optimal approach and fundamental policy for advancing the great cause of national reunification, and this stance has remained unwavering, Zheng Jian, a professor at the Taiwan Research Institute of Xiamen University, told the Global Times on Wednesday.
The spokesperson noted that however, we will never renounce the use of force and reserve the option to take all necessary measures.
Zheng said that the spokesperson's remarks demonstrate that peaceful reunification and reunification by force are not antagonistic, adding that the two are not mutually exclusive but rather mutually reinforcing, working in tandem to serve the overarching goal of reunification.
Only by not renouncing the use of force can the process of peaceful reunification be effectively advanced, Zheng noted.
He also said that not renouncing the use of force and reserving the option to take all necessary measures is not directed at Taiwan compatriots but rather at "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, both on the island and abroad, that seek to obstruct China's reunification.
According to the spokesperson, achieving peaceful reunification requires the joint efforts and mutual goodwill of compatriots on both sides of the Straits. We call on our Taiwan compatriots to stand with us in firmly opposing any form of "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external interference, resolutely advancing the cause of national reunification, and working together to build enduring well-being for the Chinese nation while sharing in the glory of its rejuvenation, Peng stated.
In recent months, the mainland has taken a series of coordinated steps to oppose separatism and advance reunification — including establishing the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration and starting a police probe into a "Taiwan independence" separatist concerning secession charges.
These measures are designed to send a clear message that, in the face of rampant interference or threats to core interests, the Chinese mainland will take decisive action, according to Zheng.
As long as the Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits jointly strive for peaceful reunification, the goal of peaceful reunification will undoubtedly be achieved, the expert said.
