Taipei, Nov. 26 (CNA) A three-way race in Taiwan's next presidential election formally took shape Friday as Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) and her running mate Chen Chien-jen (陳建仁) registered to become the third set of presidential and vice presidential candidates.

They will run against Eric Chu (朱立倫), chairman of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, and his running mate Wang Ju-hsuan (王如玄) and James Soong (宋楚瑜), leader of the People First Party (PFP), and his partner Hsu Hsin-ying (徐欣瑩), a former lawmaker who is now head of the recently founded Minkuotang party.

Speaking to reporters before heading to the Central Election Commission (CEC), Tsai vowed to 'retrieve national glory' if she wins the election on January 16, and to inject confidence and pride into the term 'Taiwanese.'

She is clear that 'to look after the people, to push through reforms and to deepen our democracy would be my responsibilities,' said Tsai, who has enjoyed a comfortable lead in opinion polls.

In her brief remarks, Tsai spoke of building 'an ideal country which is more diverse, more democratic, fairer, freer, more prosperous and more unified.'

The 59-year-old former vice premier is making a second bid for the presidency after she failed to unseat President Ma Ying-jeou of the KMT in 2012. Ma will step down in May 2016 after serving a maximum of two four-year terms.
