The Defense Ministry held the 2025 Defense AI Implementation Review Meeting today (November 18) in the main conference room of its headquarters.

The meeting, chaired by Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back, was attended by around 30 officials, including the Chair of the Defense and Security Subcommittee of the Presidential Council on National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and the Vice Chiefs of Staff of each military branch.

At the meeting, participants reviewed the progress of defense AI policies, discussed future development directions, and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing defense AX (AI transformation).

So far, the Defense Ministry has held various discussions on the demonstration plan for implementing AI-based manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems and on improving private enterprises' access to defense data.

They reviewed defense tasks outlined in the "Republic of Korea AI Action Plan," discussed the defense AX implementation strategy, and examined key defense AX projects planned for 2026. Through these efforts, the Defense Ministry has strengthened its ability to move defense AI implementation forward.

The Defense Ministry will systematically manage the progress of defense AX, strengthen defense AI capabilities, and continue developing the defense AI ecosystem.

In the short term, the Ministry will use AI technology to improve administrative processes and promote innovation in infrastructure and the broader environment through projects such as the AX hub initiative, the AX-Sprint rapid commercialization program for AI applications, and defense AI talent development.

Also, in the long term, cultivating "AI policy staff" to support the defense minister will help modernize and transform the defense decision-making process.

Furthermore, "AI combat staff" will be established to assist commanders on the battlefield, and AI-enabled weapon systems will be continuously deployed to secure the core capabilities needed to ensure victory in future warfare.

Through the defense AI implementation review meeting and related efforts, the Defense Ministry plans to share its defense AI achievements within the military and with the broader public, with the goal of becoming an advanced, strong armed force trusted by the people.

Minister Ahn assessed, "Now is the golden window for defense AI development, and this review meeting has helped lay a solid foundation for advancing defense AI."

Minister Ahn stated, "To address the decline in troop numbers, the restructuring of units, personnel, and combat capabilities must be coordinated. In this process, AI is no longer optional but an essential element of military strength."

In addition, Minister Ahn said, "The Defense Ministry is committed to rapidly cultivating AI-based military power and disseminating its achievements both within and beyond the military to transform our forces into a smart, advanced, and strong military."
