Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back delivers opening remarks at the 2025 Defense AI Implementation Review Meeting at the Ministry of National Defense in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, on Nov. 18.

Minister Ahn reaffirmed his commitment to building a smart, advanced, and strong military through rapid AI implementation and dissemination, emphasizing that this period is a "golden window" for defense AI development on November 18. The Defense Ministry plans to accelerate its "Defense AX (AI Transformation)" initiative in response to growing AI capabilities and the evolving AI ecosystem.

The Minister made this statement while hosting the 2025 Defense AI Implementation Review Meeting at the Ministry of National Defense in Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The meeting was attended by approximately 30 officials, including the Chair of the Defense Security Subcommittee of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee and the Vice Chiefs of Staff from each military branch.

Minister Ahn stated, "To address the decline in troop numbers, the restructuring of units, personnel, and combat capabilities must be coordinated. In this process, AI is no longer optional but an essential element of military strength." The Defense Ministry is committed to rapidly cultivating AI-based military power and disseminating its achievements both within and beyond the military to transform our forces into a smart, advanced, and strong military.

This conference was convened to review the various AI achievements the military has made in line with its ongoing AI transformation. Participants reviewed progress in defense AI policy during the meeting. So far, the Defense Ministry has conducted various discussion regarding validating the realization of AI-based Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) systems and improving private enterprises' access to defense data. Participants explored development directions and were briefed on the defense AX policy commitment. They reviewed defense sector tasks outlined in the "Republic of Korea AI Action Plan," discussed the defense AX implementation strategy, and examined key defense AX projects planned for next year. Through these efforts, the Defense Ministry has secured the capabilities to drive its defense AI implementation.

In the short term, the Defense Ministry will enhance administrative affairs using AI technology and proceed with the AX hub establishment project. Additionally, the Ministry will promote innovation in infrastructure and environment through AX-Sprint, a rapid commercialization support program for AI applications, and through defense AI talent development.

In the mid- to long term, developing AI policy staff to support defense decision-making will innovate the defense decision process. Establishing AI combat staff to assist commanders on the battlefield will help ensure victory in future warfare.

Minister Ahn assessed, "Now is the golden window for defense AI development, and this review meeting has helped lay a solid foundation for advancing defense AI."
