The United States and South Korea have announced a significant advancement in their partnership, agreeing to move forward with plans to build nuclear-powered submarines.

Details of the agreement indicate that South Korea will invest $150 billion in the US shipbuilding sector, alongside an additional $200 billion in various US industrial sectors.

At a news conference on Friday, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung stated that this agreement formalizes the collaboration between Washington and Seoul to develop nuclear-powered submarines.

He highlighted that this partnership will extend to shipbuilding, artificial intelligence, and the nuclear industry.

President Lee also mentioned that South Korea has secured support for expanding its authority over uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing as part of the agreement.

According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea's substantial investment in US sectors comes in exchange for a reduction in trade tariffs on Korean goods, which will decrease from 25% to 15%.

This strengthened collaboration occurs amid heightened tensions with North Korea, as well as the United States' increased military presence near China and arms sales to Chinese Taipei.

North Korea continues to pursue its own arms development, testing new weapons designed to deter foreign aggression and defend its sovereignty.

In response to these developments, China has consistently warned the US against expanding its military presence in the region.

Beijing has also protested US arms sales to Taiwan, condemning Washington for what it perceives as interference in China's domestic affairs through its support of pro-independence advocates in Taipei.
