Jeju Residents Visit NK With Food

2003-08-26

A group of 256 local residents left for North Korea Monday at the North's invitation to accept such aid to the North as tangerines and carrots, the Yonhap News Agency reported quoting officials at the Jeju provincial government.

The southern resort island is a major tourist attraction with large tangerine groves. It has donated tons of tangerines annually in the past five years to help alleviate food shortages for their hunger-stricken northern neighbor. It is the third time that North Korea has invited Jeju residents to visit the country.

The local residents went to Pyongyang aboard a commercial South Korean flight via a direct inter-Korean air route over the Yellow Sea.

During the six-day stay in the North, the South Korean delegation, including Jeju Gov. Woo Keun-min, is expected to visit the two scenic mountains Myohyang and Baekdu, according to officials for the Movement of Jeju Residents for Inter-Korean Cooperation.

Details of the tour have not been disclosed as of yet. Officials predict that the detailed schedule will be decided during consultations with North Korean authorities.

Jeju authorities hope the visit will help enhance relations between their island and North Korea ahead of a festival for peace and reunification they plan to hold on Oct. 23-27 on the island
