Pakistani alliance to protest against NATO supply line reopening

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, July 5, IRNA -- Leaders of Islamic parties in Pakistan Wednesday announced to chalk out a protest plan against the the government’s decision to reopen supply routes for NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Pakistan Tuesday night reopened NATO supply line after the U.S Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton said ‘sorry’ over the killing of 24 Pakistani soldiers in a NATO airstrike in November.

The Defense Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) took the decision to allow NATO trucks after a ban of nearly seven months of suspension.

The Federal Cabinet Wednesday endorsed the decision of DCC to reopen of NATO supply route and also appreciated the deliberations of the participants of DCC in this regard, an official statement said.

Islamic groups angrily reacted to the government decision and said they would hold demonstrations against the reopening of the NATO supply line.

The Defense of Pakistan Council (DPC), an alliance of nearly 40 religio-political groups said a protest plan will be chalked out against the restoration of NATO supplies through Pakistan.

Chief of the DPC Maulana Samil-ul-Haq rejected the reopening of NATO supply line and said he has started consultations with the alliance leaders to chalk out a strategy to resist the decision.

Haq told IRNA on phone that the DPC’s top leaders will meet in a couple of days to announce a protest campaign.

He regretted that the DCC ignored the unanimous parliamentary resolution, which had called for a halt to the US drone strikes in the tribal regions. He said the US has not promised to stop the drone attacks despite the parliament's call and the government’s demands. He regretted that the DCC decision is a move to become part in the killings and destruction in Afghanistan.
